Latin helps develop more extensive vocabulary because it is foundational to the romantic languages. The history behind many of our words in the English language comes from Latin, giving context to much of our language.   The ordered structure of Latin helps build skills that are foundational to learning other languages and reinforces English grammar skills.  Latin offers key understandihg to much of the language used in the medical, legal, and scientific realms.

The cosmos had a meaning to the ancient world that was deeper than our understanding of the "universe." The cosmos implied all that was in the universe but more importantly the nature and order of the way in which it worked.  The quadrivium thereby sets the foundational skills to being able to understand the ordered world from mathematical explanation to understanding time and space.
